Quantitative Biofacies Analysis to Identify Relationships and Refine Controls on Paleosol Development, Prince Creek Formation, North Slope Alaska, USA

چکیده

Late Cretaceous coastal plain deposits of the Prince Creek Formation (PCF) offer a rare glimpse into an ancient, high-latitude, arctic greenhouse ecosystem for which there is no modern analog. Here, we employ quantitative biofacies analysis to explore spatio-temporal variability in PCF palynomorph and microbiota assemblages from nine paleosol horizons exposed along Colville River, North Slope, Alaska. Biofacies results provide insight paleoenvironmental controls on ecosystem. Cluster ordination analyses recognize five following two assemblage types: (1) fern moss dominated (2) algae assemblages. Ordination arrays environmental gradients related soil moisture marine influence. Fern regularly water-logged paleosols lake swamp margins lower delta clearly segregated periodically drier levee-overbank paleosols. These support previous interpretations sedimentology, paleopedology, geochemistry that suggest fluctuations water table, seasonal river discharge variations topography drainage, controlled development vegetation growth across plain. This biofacies-based approach provides independent predictive tool cross-check interpreting conditions any ancient

Energy Development on Alaska ' s North Slope : Effects on the Inupiat Population

M UCH OF THE RESEARCH examining the effects of energy development on Indian and Eskimo groups con~ eludes that such resource extraction projects bring few real bene~ fits to local communities. Reviewing the impact of the Navajo Tribal Council's leasing of oil, natural gas, helium, and coal to energy corporations, Robbins (1978) argues that these sales have improved the economic position of only...

The first reported ceratopsid dinosaur from eastern North America (Owl Creek Formation, Upper Cretaceous, Mississippi, USA)

Ceratopsids ("horned dinosaurs") are known from western North America and Asia, a distribution reflecting an inferred subaerial link between the two landmasses during the Late Cretaceous. However, this clade was previously unknown from eastern North America, presumably due to limited outcrop of the appropriate age and depositional environment as well as the separation of eastern and western Nor...

L-Band InSAR Penetration Depth Experiment, North Slope Alaska

Since the first spacecraft-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) mission NASA’s SEASAT in 1978 radars have been flown in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) by other national space agencies including the Canadian Space Agency, European Space Agency, India Space Research Organization and the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency. Improvements in electronics, miniaturization and production have allowed for the ...

Economic Feasibility of North Slope Propane Production and Distribution to Select Alaska Communities

Could propane from Alaska’s North Slope reduce energy costs for electric utilities and residential space heating, water heating, and cooking demands? We explored the hypothesis that propane is a viable alternative for fourteen selected communities along the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers, coastal Alaska, and Fairbanks. Our analysis forecasts propane and fuel prices at the wholesale and retail level...
